When browsing the internet today we are always thinking about speed, how fast will a web page open? Why is the internet taking so long to load that picture?

Well one of the reasons may be you have a slow browser. In this article I will compare the 3 main browsers and then show you a tweak on how to make Firefox faster. The three main browsers I am going to be talking about are Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer.

We will start by looking at the speed of these browsers. After doing a bit of research and also looking at other peoples tests I would have to say that Google Chrome is the fastest browser, however is does not contain as many features as Firefox. Then Firefox would be the second fastest with Internet Explorer comming last.

If we look at which browser is the most popular, at this current momemt Firefox is top of the pack. IE second and Chrome third. This is due to massive amount of extra features and better security offered by Firefox. Firefox has a whole community which likes to modify and better its browser.

So looking at these statistics and with my own experience I would definitely say give Firefox a try, when you do please try the tweak I am going to explain here.

Step 1
To start, open Mozilla Firefox and clear the address bar. Here you need to type the following: about:config

Press enter to submit the address. Here you will get a message which will warn you about the risks if you randomly change settings. However, stick to this guide and you will be fine. Click the button to continue.

Step 2
Here the configuration list will appear. First we will start with the two easiest settings to change. First, type the following into the Filter at the top of the page: network.http

This will automatically filter all of the preferences which relate to the network settings.

Step 3
Select the two following entries and double click them to change their values from false to true:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy-pipeining

Step 4
On the current list you will have the following entry: network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Double click this entry and change the value from 4 to 30.

This will allow the browser to make a larger number of page requests at once, in turn making your browser more responsive.

Step 5
Now it’s time to minimise browser reaction times. Right click on any of the white space and select New > Integer.

It will then ask you to input a new Integer name. For this, type the following: nglayout.initialpaint.delay and click Ok to continue.

Now it will ask for a value, for this enter 0. This will set the delay to zero so the browser reacts faster.

Step 6
Now all that’s needed is to restart Firefox. Close all current browsers and reopen them. The new settings will now be applied.
