Seaweeds give protection to fish and other aquatic animals in the open ocean. With tremendously strong currents, seaweeds, such as bull kelp:, break off from their holdfast, and with their large bladders, these float through the ocean. Young juvenile fish use this as protection from predators. Other animals in the ocean also use this broken off seaweeds as an ideal hiding place from their predators.

The oceans are full of life –and just a small part of the oceans have been investigated. There are a lot more life that has not yet been seen – what has already been found is really amazing.

Many of the deep sea animals wait until dusk and a huge vertical journey[/spin takes place. They travel [spin]many metreslong distances to arrive nearer to the surface in search of food. Once dawn starts to arrive, they travel as many metres again to the deep sea.

Migration takes place in many different ways in the ocean. It is not known yet why some animals do migrate. For example, a marine mammal, the gray whale travels to the Artic to feed. It is not known why they then travel to the lower latitudes, but one motive is that the gray whale goes to warmer climates to breed and have their young. The calf does not have the blubber to keep it warm in the Artic, hence the long excursion down to lower latitudes where the sea is warmer.

The life in the ocean begins with the plants. The most plentiful are the phytoplankton. These are single celled tiny plants that glide throughout the surface of the oceans. Plants use photosynthesis to produce. The surface of the ocean has billions of phytoplankton including diatoms, dinoflagellates, coccolithophorids and cyanobacteria, all which are tiny plants. With other plants such as seaweed, the diatoms help form the first link in most of the marine food chains.

The term algae includes phytoplankton and seaweeds. Seaweeds are similar to the phytoplankton in that they take up the nutrients from the surrounding water. product can also be called macro algae.

Zooplankton likes to eat other plankton, such as microscopic crustaceans. They eat the phytoplankton, and in turn are eaten by fish and other larger animals, so provide an key link in the ocean’s food chain. Zooplankton mainly drifts with the ocean’s currents, and there are two types – those that remain as plankton, and those that are only temporarily zooplankton. For example, those that remain as zooplankton are jelly fish. The temporary zooplankton are organisms such as larvae of fish and crustaceans that will become free swimming.

The abounding range of life in the ocean forms a very balanced web of predators and prey and everyone is reliant on the other for survival.
